What Etsy really takes from each sale

Listing fees, transaction fees, payment processing and Offsite Ads: here is what an Etsy sale really costs, and how your own store compares.

Etsy's fees look small one by one. Put together, they often take 15 to 25% of a sale, and more when the sale came from one of Etsy's ads.

The fees on an Etsy sale

  • Listing fee: 0.20 USD per listing, renewed every four months or after each sale
  • Transaction fee: 6.5% of the total, shipping included
  • Payment processing: a percentage plus a fixed amount, depending on your country
  • Offsite Ads: 15% of the order (12% above 10,000 USD of yearly sales) when the buyer came from an Etsy ad, mandatory for larger shops

Rates change and some depend on your country, so check Etsy's fee page for the exact numbers in your case.

An example

Take a 40 € necklace with 5 € shipping. The transaction fee alone is about 2.90 €, payment processing adds about 2 €, and the listing fee is renewed. If the buyer came from an Offsite Ad, add about 6.75 €. That is up to 12 € of a 45 € order.

On your own store

On a Shopify store you pay a monthly plan and the card processing fee. There is no commission on your sales and no advertising fee you didn't choose. With FromEtsy, the first 120 days of the Shopify subscription are free.

The point is not to leave Etsy

Every buyer you send to your own store instead of your Etsy listing keeps more money in your pocket. Returning customers, social media followers and people who find you on Google are the easiest ones to move.
