If you sell on Etsy, Shopify is the natural next step: a store of your own, under your own name. Here is what changes, what it costs, and how to start without spending weeks on it.
Etsy and Shopify are not the same thing
Etsy is a marketplace: millions of buyers visit Etsy and see your products among everyone else's. Shopify is a store builder: you get your own website, and the visitors are yours. Etsy brings traffic; Shopify gives you control. That is why the two work best together.
| Shopify | Etsy | |
|---|---|---|
| Fees on each sale | Card processing only | 6.5% transaction + processing + listing fees |
| Advertising fee | Only the ads you choose | Offsite Ads 12–15% on some sales |
| Your customers' emails | Yes | No |
| Design | Your own brand | Etsy's layout |
| Buyers who find you | You bring them (social, Google, email) | Etsy brings them |
What Shopify costs
Shopify charges a monthly plan; the Basic plan is enough for most makers. Card processing is charged per order. There is no commission on your sales. Prices depend on your country and on monthly or yearly billing, and Shopify often offers a free trial.
How Etsy sellers use Shopify
- Keep Etsy for discovery, and send repeat buyers to Shopify
- Put the Shopify address on packaging, cards and social media
- Collect emails and announce new collections
- Show products on Google Shopping through Shopify's free Google channel
Can Shopify and Etsy be connected?
Yes. Sync apps can keep products and stock in step between the two. They are useful once both stores exist, but they don't build or design your Shopify store for you.
